Human Rights and Resource Management --- An Overview
Introduction The Interrelationship Between Human Rights and Resource Management Until recently, human rights and resource management would generally be perceived as rather separate legal areas. Ideas of human rights were developed at a time when resources were seen as unlimited. [1] Today the link is more obvious. Degradation of natural resources and the environment threatens the economic base and welfare of millions of people. We now see more clearly than how access to natural resources, and the wise management of such resources, is a condition for the fulfillment of many human rights --- in particular, social, economic, and cultural rights. The scarcity of natural resources in many parts of the world raises questions of balanced exploitation and fair distribution of these resources. The relevance of this relationship becomes even evident when we consider the conditions of future generations.
